San Juan Diego Catholic High School's Corporate Internship Program (CIP) proudly welcomes Freytag's Florist as a new Corporate Partner this school year.
Ken Freytag, a native of Austin, Texas, began his journey in the floral industry at just 15 years old. After the passing of his father, Ken enrolled in a vocational work program at Reagan High School, which led him to his first florist job at Airport Florist. For two years, he learned the trade under the guidance of Naomi, Truman, and Gerald McPhail. Following that, he spent two more years at The Flower Box. Eager to refine his craft, Ken attended the Buddy Benz School of Floral Design, where he spent two intense weeks of full-day classes, learning directly from Mr. Benz himself.
At 18, Ken took a bold step by signing a lease and securing a loan to open his first brick-and-mortar store. While waiting for Mesa Plaza to be completed, he worked out of his mother's garage. Just in time for Valentine's Day 1974, Freytag's Florist officially opened, making 73 deliveries on their first holiday. That same year, Ken married Terri in July at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, kicking off a whirlwind of growth. The couple welcomed their son Chad in 1978 and their daughter Casey in 1980. Their family became deeply involved in the Northwest Hills community, where they purchased their home in 1980 and where the main florist shop thrived for 29 years.
Both Chad and Casey followed in their parents' footsteps, attending local schools and becoming part of the family business. In 2002, Freytag's Florist expanded, purchasing the old Steak & Ale location on Anderson Lane, which now houses a 20,000-square-foot retail store and design center.
For over 50 years, Freytag's Florist has been a growing part of the Austin community, offering high-quality florals and personalized service. The business takes pride in sourcing the finest flowers and creating exceptional designs to suit any budget, specializing in contemporary and unique arrangements. It’s this dedication to quality and connection with customers that has earned Freytag’s its reputation—and numerous awards—as the best florist in Austin.
Our student interns look forward to learning under the mentorship of manager Carrie Culver and her team this school year. Thank you to the Freytag Family for this incredible opportunity!
