Embodying the spirit of faith and excellence, our San Juan Diego Catholic High School's athletic
mission is to foster a community where physical talents are cultivated alongside moral character.
Grounded in the principles of integrity, teamwork, and perseverance, we strive to empower
student-athletes to achieve their highest potential both on and off the field. Through disciplined
training, respectful competition, and unwavering sportsmanship, we aim to inspire a lifelong
commitment to health, leadership, and service to others. Guided by our faith, we endeavor to
build champions who embody the Holy Cross values of building respect, educating hearts and
minds, being family, and bringing hope - enriching our school community and the world beyond.
1. Spiritual and Character Development: Emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and
integrity in all athletic endeavors, integrating Catholic values into athletic competition.
2. Academic Excellence: Balancing academics and athletics, ensuring student-athletes
prioritize their studies while excelling in sports.
3. Physical Fitness and Health: To help fulfill the charism of Cura Personalis, care of the
whole person, knowing that physical activity combined with intellectual, professional, and
spiritual growth, creates strong Christian leaders.
4. Leadership Development: Fostering leadership skills among student-athletes,
preparing them to be role models both on and off the field. Hard work, self-sacrifice, and
teamwork are the seeds necessary to compete at a high level in the pursuit of victory.
5. Competitive Success: Striving for excellence in athletic performance, while maintaining
a perspective that emphasizes the journey, personal growth, and sportsmanship over
winning at all costs and individual statistics.
6. Sportsmanship and Respect: Sportsmanship, respect, and Catholic values are
intertwined principles that guide conduct and interactions both on and off the field.
Cultivating an environment where respect for opponents, officials, and teammates is
paramount regardless of the outcome.
7. Parent and Community Engagement: Building strong partnerships with parents,
alumni, and the wider community to support the athletic program and its goals.
Overall, these goals and objectives not only focus on athletic achievement but also seek to
enrich the overall educational experience of students, integrating faith and academics
The 4 Holy Cross values—Building Respect, Educating Hearts and Minds, Being Family, and
Bringing Hope—each play a significant role in the context of SJDCHS athletics, contributing to
both the development of athletes and the overall spirit of the sports community. They provide a
framework that goes beyond wins and losses, focusing on the holistic development of
student-athletes and the positive impact they can have on their school communities and
beyond.
1. Building Respect:
Building respect extends beyond mere sportsmanship. It involves fostering respect for opponents, coaches, officials, and the game itself. Athletes learn to appreciate diverse backgrounds and perspectives, promoting inclusivity and fairness on and off the field.
2. Educating Hearts and Minds:
Our educational charism calls us to educated hearts and minds. Coaches and educators use sports as a tool to teach important life lessons such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and leadership. These values transcend wins and losses, shaping individuals into well-rounded contributors to society.
3. Being Family:
High School athletics strengthen school pride and foster a sense of community among students, parents/guardians, alumni, and faculty. Teammates develop deep bonds through shared experiences, celebrating victories together and providing comfort during defeats. Coaches and staff act as mentors, guiding athletes through challenges both on and off the field, creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
4. Bringing Hope:
Athletics provides opportunities to form disciples, instilling confidence and ambition in student-athletes. Beyond individual aspirations, successful teams can uplift entire school communities, fostering pride and a positive outlook. Athletics also serve as a beacon of hope by promoting resilience in the face of adversity and demonstrating the rewards of hard work and dedication.
SJDCHS currently offers 16 varsity sports and 2 club sports. The athletic program emphasizes skill development, teamwork, physical fitness, and, above all, sportsmanship.
SJDCHS student-athletes are also recognized as leaders in our community and receive many honors and awards from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) for their athletic achievement and academic accomplishments. SJDCHS will compete in TAPPS Class 3A level of competition during the 2024-2026 term.
